Centean

Student Counsellor

3rd year Bachelor of Applied Counselling (B.A Counselling), National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support (Level 4), Interactive Drawing Therapy (Foundation Level)

Centean advocates for a holistic and collaborative approach to wellness. She firmly believes in the healing power of connection/whakawhanaungatanga and the therapeutic relationships ability to facilitate growth and enhance the mana of both client and counsellor. She is passionate about supporting clients to recognise their inherent resilience, increase self-awareness, and tap into their own innate wisdom and creativity. Her kaupapa is to help clients discover who they want to be and to empower them to live a life aligned with their true values and aspirations.

Centean is of Ngāi Tūhoe descent and is currently on a journey to reclaim her own taha māori.

Centean previously worked as a community support worker for 10 years in dual disability services, which is where her dedication to the person-centered approach first developed. Centean’s lived experience of mental health challenges inspired her to pursue a career in counselling and has led her to explore a multitude of therapeutic avenues herself throughout the years. This firsthand experience equips her with a deep well of knowledge, empathy, and authenticity that she channels into her professional practice.

She uses a range of modalities in sessions and is trained in Interactive Drawing Therapy (Foundation Level). Centean appreciates how creative interventions have the capacity to bring information from the client’s subconscious mind into their conscious awareness, and how such insights can serve as a catalyst for change. She has an interest in attachment theory and previously facilitated the “Incredible Years” parenting programme at FFSS. Additionally, she is also interested in trauma and strategies for managing emotional dysregulation, as well as non-western approaches to healing.
